Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gum disease. Gum disease can develop from a build-up of plaque on the teeth and gums. Bacteria within this plaque can irritate the gums, causing redness, swelling and bleeding. If this early stage of gum disease (known as gingivitis) is not treated, it can lead to periodontitis, a more serious condition that can affect the gum and underlying bone.

If you are found to have gum disease, scaling and root planing can help. Scaling cleans deposits from the teeth and root planing smooths the root area to prevent further bacteria from collecting under the gumline.
We can also surgically address bone loss and perform gum grafts to treat the effects of advanced gum disease. In addition, we offer crown lengthening, a procedure to expose more of the tooth above the gum to allow for successful placement of a crown. This type of surgery can also be used for aesthetic reasons, to remove excess gum tissue and eliminate a ‘gummy’ smile.

During a periodontal examination, your dentist or hygienist will be able to see signs of gum swelling, redness or bleeding. They will also use special instruments to measure the depth of the ‘pockets’ between your teeth and gums. In a healthy mouth, this depth is usually between 1-3mm. Our periodontal treatment often helps patients with a depth of more than 4mm, especially those under 40 years old and those with persistent pocketing, despite having had numerous appointments with a hygienist.
